Members of the Greene County High School chapter of National Honor Society recently delivered a trunk-load of diapers and baby wipes to the Greene County Early Learning Center. The donation was the students’ part in the Lots of Socks project organized by RSVP 55+ of Greene County.
The Lots of Socks project collects donations of new socks and underwear for distribution through New Opportunities. For the past several years, the students have helped by providing “under wear” for the infants and toddlers at the Early Learning Center. The diapers are used for those unexpected times diaper bags don’t have enough supplies to get a child through the day, ELC executive director Cherie Cerveny explained.
The students paid for their purchases with the proceeds of a bake sale held during the high school play in November.
Not including NHS’s participation, the Lots of Socks collection netted 1,410 items. Most of the socks were used during Christmas distributions at New Opportunities. Some were taken to the Paton-Churdan school, and toddler socks and underwear were taken to the Greene County Early Learning Center.
RSVP 55+ Volunteer Program of Boone and Greene Counties recruits persons 55 and older to use their skills and experiences to better their community through volunteerism in assisting non-profit, health, education, and governmental entities. The signature programs of RSVP in Greene County are the Grocery Assistance Program (GAP), which matches volunteer grocery shoppers with homebound seniors, and volunteers at Greene County Elementary School who listen to children read.
RSVP 55+ receives funding from the Senior Corps of the Corporation for National and Community Service.
